Description
This 1801 $10 Early Eagle has been certified and graded by NGC as AU55. NGC’s encapsulation guarantees the coins AU55 Condition. A true icon of early American coinage, the $10 Draped Bust Gold Eagle, affectionately known as the "Early Eagle," represents one of the foundational denominations established by the Coinage Act of 1792. Alongside the silver dollar, it served as a cornerstone of the young nation's monetary system—so significant that all other gold denominations were measured in fractions or multiples of it. Although authorized in 1792, production did not begin until 1795 due to stringent security and bonding requirements at the U.S. Mint. These high-denomination coins were struck only on demand, resulting in extremely low mintages—fewer than 10,000 coins per year until 1799—making them exceptionally rare and desirable. These coins are not only celebrated for their historical significance and classic design, but also for their scarcity. More than just numismatic rarities, Early Eagles are tangible relics of a young republic's ambition and identity.
